What Causes Hair Loss In Men?

It is normal for men and women to lose about 100 strands of hair a day, so finding a few hairs here and there is no big deal. However, once you start noticing a receding hairline and thinning hair, or hair falling out in clumps, it is time to start thinking about ways to prevent hair loss. The most common cause of hair loss in men is called androgenic alopecia, or more commonly, male pattern baldness. This is when the hairline begins to recede or thinning occurs on the crown of the head, and by age 50, about 85 percent of men will experience this. For some, this hair loss starts at a younger age. About a quarter of all men will experience some level of male pattern baldness by their 21st birthday.

Male pattern baldness is typically caused by dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. This is a androgen that is the byproduct of the male hormone testosterone. For many men, DHT will bind to receptors in the hair follicles, causing them to shrink and eventually die. When DHT reaches the follicles, it prevents the growth of new hair and causes existing hair to fall out, resulting in thinning and baldness. For that reason, it is important to use a DHT blocker shampoo to decrease hair loss.

Another form of hair loss that men can experience in telogen effluvium, which is temporary hair thinning brought on by a traumatic emotional or physical event, such as a devastating loss of a loved one or a severe illness. This usually occurs several months after the traumatic event and hair will typically return several months after that.

Some other causes of hair loss in men include genetics (whether or not you are predisposed to male pattern baldness), hormone imbalances, stress, crash diets, or medical conditions such as thyroid disease, diabetes, or an iron deficiency.

What Can Men Do About Hair Loss?

The first thing men can do about hair loss is not panic. Like we mentioned above, most men will experience hair loss. It’s normal. Because stress can contribute to hair loss, you want to make sure you are as stress-free as possible.

Then, make sure you are using a hair loss shampoo for men that addresses the main cause of hair loss, DHT. Nourish Beaute’s hair loss shampoo for men uses a clinically proven DHT-blocker. In ours, we use Procapil, a powerful DHT-blocker derived from biotin (an essential vitamin for hair growth), oleanolic acid (found in olive trees), and apigenin (derived from citrus). This ingredient has been clinically proven to increase hair growth and decrease hair loss in participants. Our shampoo also has other healthy-hair ingredients like coconut oil and castor oil.

Follow up with a hair loss prevention conditioner. Ours is powered by Baicapil, another clinically proven hair loss prevention ingredient that has been shown to reduce hair loss by 60 percent, increase growth by 168 percent, and increase density by 59 percent. Our hair growth support conditioner is sulfate- and paraben-free, and contains biotin, keratin, and other vitamins that hair loves.

Lastly, treat your hair right. Make sure to follow a healthy diet, take your vitamins, and drink plenty of water. When you get out of the shower, gently pat your hair dry, rather than towel-drying it the same way you would towel-dry a wet dog. Wear a hat if you’ll be out in the sun this summer, and be careful soaking your hair in chlorine at the pool.
